The 37-year-old Danish international goalkeeping legend will catch up with his new team-mates on their tour of the USA after signing a 12-month deal with the champions.

Schmeichel, who won his 105th cap during his four games for his country in Euro 24, will be a straight replacement for his former Manchester City team-mate Joe Hart as No.1 at Parkhead.

The one-time England No.1 retired at the end of the season at the age of 37 following three successful years in Scotland in which he won seven honours – including three titles – before deciding to call it a day.

The towering shotstopper is also looking forward to reuniting again with Brendan Rodgers, his ex-boss at Leicester City when they lifted the English FA Cup in 2021.

Schmeichel, speaking to the club website, said: “I am absolutely delighted to join Celtic and can’t wait to get started.

“Celtic is one of the world’s proper football clubs, a massive name and a place of real passion and success. Celtic is what football is all about.

“I know Brendan very well, too. He is a top manager and someone I can’t wait to work with again.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting up with the boys in America and start our work and then, of course, meet our fans who bring so much to Celtic.

“I will be doing all I can to keep Celtic on top and bring these brilliant supporters more and more success.”

The Great Dane was a free agent after leaving Belgian outfit Anderlecht at the end of his one-year contract in the summer. He previously played for Ligue 1 outfit Nice after leaving the King Power club in 2022.

Schmeichel is the second keeper to join the Hoops this week as he follows Finnish international Viljami to the double winners.

The 22-year-old netminder, capped three times by his country, penned a five-year deal after Aston Villa accepted a £1million bid for their top prospect.

Scott Bain, who was back-up for Hart over the past two seasons, will complete the goalkeeping complement at Scotland’s title kings.

Swiss shotstopper Benji Siegrist is expected to leave this summer.
