Wrexham have reportedly been left red-faced over a ‘released’ star who is still under contract at the club.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s Red Dragons are preparing for life in League One after securing back-to-back promotions over the last two campaigns.

With the official opening date of the summer transfer window on the horizon, it has been claimed that Wrexham have made an administrative error.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the error meant one of their released players actually still has a year left on his contract.

Back in May, the Welsh club announced that defender Jordan Tunnicliffe was one of eight players axed following the supposed expiration of his contract.

However, it has now been claimed that an error was made during the process and Tunnicliffe’s contract end date is actually June 2025 rather than June 2024.

The report stated: “An input mistake was made when Tunnicliffe’s initial contract was drawn up and the expiry on the document was June 2025 rather than June 2024.

“The former Crawley Town defender is now in negotiations with Wrexham as the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-backed side look to come to a swift resolution. In a statement to Mail Sport, Wrexham confirmed that they are aware of Tunnicliffe’s contract dispute and it has been referred to an independent determination.”

SPORTbible has contacted Wrexham for comment.

Back in the summer of 2022, Tunnicliffe joined Wrexham and went on to make only 41 appearances for the club.

The centre-back’s career with the Welsh club has been badly hampered by a string of injury problems.

Speaking after his initial release, Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson labelled Tunnicliffe as an ‘immense character’.

Since securing their place in League One, Wrexham have been linked with a host of different players ahead of what could be a very busy summer transfer window for the Red Dragons.
