Ian Maatsen, a former Burnley loanee, is getting close to joining Aston Villa on a high-profile deal.

The Athletic reports that Unai Emery’s team and Maatsen’s parent club Chelsea have reached an agreement on a £37.5 million cost.

The left-back played with Borussia Dortmund on loan during the previous season. He helped the Bundesliga team go to the Champions League final, where Real Madrid defeated them 2-0.

Dortmund had an option to make the 22-year-old’s move permanent for £35m at the end of the season, but this has proven too expensive and, as of Monday, that clause has now expired.

Instead, Villa have swooped in and agreed personal terms with the Dutchman, who is set to sign a six-year contract at Villa Park.

The Clarets had Maatsen on loan during the 2022/23 season, where the left-back helped the Clarets romp to the Championship title with 101 points.

He made 42 appearances during his time in East Lancashire, scoring four times.

Prior to their Premier League comeback, Burnley was eager to bring the raiding full-back to Turf Moor, but an agreement could not be reached.

Maatsen, who joined Chelsea in 2018 after leaving PSV Eindhoven, has previously been on loan at Coventry City and Charlton Athletic.

The Chelsea player was not included in Ronald Koeman’s final Euro 2024 squad, after having been named in Holland’s preliminary one earlier this summer.

But Frenkie de Jong’s injury forced him to be called up, and he’s presently training with his Dutch teammates for this Friday’s match against France.
