Middlesbrough are worried about the fitness of a number of players ahead of their trip to Sheffield Wednesday. Alex Bangura, a left-back, is expected to be evaluated ahead of the televised Hillsborough match.

Bangura’s debut was cut short by a hamstring injury in Boro’s 2-1 loss to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. Head coach Michael Carrick, on the other hand, has announced that Lukas Engel has returned to full training and is eligible for selection. Engel is expected to take over in defense for Bangura.

“There’s been one or two scans going around in the last day or so, as you’d expect when games are coming thick and fast,” Carrick explained. “We’re looking into it, and we’ll see who’s fresh and available on Tuesday.”

Boro travel to South Yorkshire in pursuit of their first league victory of the season. Middlesbrough, who were defeated in the Championship play-offs last season, are bottom of the table and behind the Owls on goal difference after collecting just one point from their first six games.

Despite the campaign’s slow start, Carrick says that chairman Steve Gibson is “calm” and that they are both on the same wavelength. “Of course, I speak to him – he’s not hiding from me yet!” he said. We talk a lot, and the atmosphere is pleasant.
