Crystal Palace captain Joel Ward believes Aston Villa should not have been awarded a penalty that proved pivotal in the Eagles’ 3-1 loss.

Palace appeared to be heading home with a point as Odsonne Edouard’s opener was cancelled out late in the second half by Jhon Duran. Three minutes from time, the Colombian came off the bench to score a spectacular equalizer before Villa were granted a penalty.

Leon Bailey finished the game in added time after Douglas Luiz made no mistake from the penalty spot. It was the Eagles’ first road loss of the season.

Ward believes Palace were penalized because the referee was under pressure during the game. “It killed it for us,” he said of the penalty.
