A young Championship star might be signed by West Ham to serve as a world-class bargain’s backup.

West Ham has made a lot of wise acquisitions in recent years. For their individual prices, Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen, and Vladimir Coufal were all excellent values. However, the signing of left-back Emerson Palmieri for a pitiful £13 million may be the biggest bargain of the lot.

The so-called Mr Consistent has been one of the best fullbacks in the entire Premier League this season and his near flawless performance against Brentford was just another example of this.

Unfortunately though, as we all know, no player can play every single game in the Premier League, League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League. However, with it looking likely that Cresswell will depart in the Summer, that is the current situation that Emerson is facing.

Thankfully, the club are said to be eager to bring in a backup for him and one that can push him to be even better. According to talkSPORT, that man could be Leif Davis. Our own ExWHUEmployee exclusively revealed our interest in the Ipswich defender some months ago and it looks like that could be reignited at the end of the season.

The 24-year-old has been crucial to the Tractor Boys’ brilliant first season back in the Championship. He is someone that suits the Hammers perfectly as he is homegrown, has the ability to make the step up to the top flight and, with someone like Emerson to look up to, could really benefit from having those experienced at the very highest level around him.

However, Davis would not just be back up (he is simply too good for that) but rather give the Italian some genuine competition for a spot in the starting XI. With how light their squad is, complacency could become a real issue for the Hammers but, if they do go in for him, it is something they are clearly eager to prevent.

Dipping into the Championship has worked out well for our Irons so far, hopefully Leif Davis can be yet another successful signing in this new era of West Ham.
