Birmingham City have done eBirmingham City have performed admirably in the early stages of this season, collecting 11 points from a possible 15.
Jay Stansfield, on loan from Fulham, has been instrumental in allowing them to pick up an extra four points, with goals against Plymouth Argyle and Millwall effectively winning Blues those points.

Not only has their new ownership given the club new vitality, but so have the additions to their roster, and the nice thing about their summer transfer business is that they have been granted permission to bring the majority of their acquisitions in on a permanent basis.

This will allow John Eustace and his coaching staff to plan for the long future, which is greatly required after relying heavily on the loan market for several years.

They will only get stronger as the international break approaches, with Eustace now having more time on the training pitch to strengthen his team and the way they collaborate.

They can’t hope to go unbeaten for much longer, but a top-half position at the end of this season will be a step forward following years of poor league performances under their previous owners.

How does Birmingham City’s start compare to the previous season?

Birmingham had been back in the Championship for a few years when their 2023/24 season began.

They had a slow start to the season, collecting only four points out of a possible 15 in their first five league games.

Blues appeared to have found their footing around the Christmas season, going unbeaten in the league for an extended stretch of time.

However, they were exceedingly weak in 2014, losing their final five league games before the season ended.

After falling behind 2-0 against Bolton Wanderers, it appeared that they would be relegated – but Nikola Zigic equalized for the visitors and Paul Caddis scored a stoppage-time equalizer to keep them in the second tier.

How does Birmingham City’s wage bill in 2023/24 compare to 2013/14?

The average weekly pay for the 2023/24 team is £5,297, according to Capology’s ESTIMATE.

Krystian Bielik has the highest predicted weekly earnings of £20,000, which is not surprising given his background, with Juninho Bacuna, Ivan Sunjic, and Neil Etheridge also making more than £15,000 per week.

It should be noted that some of their first-team players, including the majority of their summer acquisitions, have yet to be given an estimated wage.

They are expected to be paid well, given that they have the freedom to spend as a result of some crucial summer sales and the windfall generated by Jude Bellingham’s departure.

Some members of the 2013/14 squad have yet to be given salaries on Capology, however their anticipated average income is £3,767, which is substantially lower than that of 2023/24.

According to the same article, Nikola Zigic earned an estimated £60,000 each week, with no other player of the 2013/14 squad earning more than £10,000.

This disparity between 2013/14 and 2023/24 is unsurprising given the surge in transfer fees over the last decade – and with the income produced in the summer, the Blues can definitely afford to keep their present wage bill.
