Sunderland’s decision to fire Tony Mowbray has been attacked, with analyst Don Goodman warning that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Despite Mowbray’s departure, Goodman believes Sunderland can still beat West Brom because of the quality he brought through. Sunderland’s forthcoming game against West Brom is critical, as a defeat may leave them eight points behind and jeopardize their promotion ambitions.

Mowbray’s tenure at the Stadium of Light came to an end after approximately 15 months, with his dismissal occurring on Monday night. His final match in charge, a 1-1 draw against Millwall, marked the third consecutive winless game since the resumption of play after the November international break.

As Sunderland searches for a new manager, Mike Dodds is expected to lead the team in their upcoming league clash against Albion at the Stadium of Light. Despite Mowbray’s departure, EFL pundit Don Goodman criticized the decision, emphasizing the quality of work done by the veteran coach. Goodman cautioned Sunderland about the potential consequences of such a decision, highlighting Mowbray’s role in developing young talent like Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts.

Expressing disbelief at Mowbray’s sacking, Goodman praised the coach’s ability to enhance the skills of every young player through his coaching. Despite the managerial change, Goodman believes Sunderland can still secure a positive result against the Baggies, predicting a 2-2 draw in the upcoming fixture.

West Brom lead Sunderland by five points, with the Wearsiders only three points off of the play-off places.

If West Brom win at the Stadium of Light, the gap may widen to eight points.

Last December, the Baggies defeated Sunderland 2-1 at home, with goals from Tom Rogic and Daryl Dike securing all three points.
Dodds will take over as caretaker manager as the Championship club looks for a replacement for Mowbray.

Mowbray leaves the club ninth in the second division league, having won only two of his past nine games in charge.

The two teams face on Saturday at 12.30 p.m.
