Purchasing Mads Hermansen for under £5 million has proven to be an incredible coup for Leicester City’s recruitment team and Enzo Maresca.

From the previous season to the current one, Leicester’s playing style has completely changed. They were a somewhat lifeless and boring squad to watch during their final season in the Premier League. They also gave up around two goals per game and squandered a lot of opportunities.

Regarding the Leicester team for 2023–2024, the same cannot be said. They’re getting more opportunities to create and complete huge plays, and they control the ball in every game they play. They have a young, talented collection of athletes on their roster. It looks inevitable to climb back up to the top 20 teams in the English football pyramid.

Maresca, the new boss, is mostly to blame for this. He’s executed a play style that’s visually appealing and successful. The club has a distinct character and strategy, and recruitment has been very successful.

One player in particular sticks out among the newcomers they’ve added.

Signing of the season?

Leicester may have acquired the finest goalkeeper in the league for a mere £5 million. That was a very smart approach, especially considering the amount of money at stake in the Championship.

The summer saw the arrival of the 23-year-old Danish goalkeeper from Brondby, who made an impression in his nation’s top division during the 2022–2023 campaign.

Brondby was not the best defensive team in that campaign. It was a gamble to bring in a young goalie from a mediocre Danish team, but it has more than paid off. Even if he’s the second most costly Championship goalie ever, his value is undeniable right now.

Hermansen has made far more of an impact than Ellis Simms, who went to Coventry for a comparable sum.

Why Mads Hermansen is so good

Maresca had a specific game strategy in mind when he entered King Power Stadium. It required playing out of the back, which was going to be challenging given Leicester’s prior group of keepers.

Because of his on-the-ball confidence, the team’s possession rate is close to 70%. Unlike previous Leicester keepers, he is not a point of weakness that can be exploited by opponents.

When a ball goes over the top of his defense, he excels in jumping out of his box to intercept it. According to Sofascore, he has a 100% successful run out percentage. By doing this, he gives his teammates greater room to press higher up the pitch and force the opposition to make more mistakes in more vulnerable positions. In the end, all of this results in the Foxes spending the majority of games in their opponents’ half.
