When it comes to the transfer window, Leeds United made a different decision compared to other relegated teams.

Leeds saw eight players from the club from the previous season leave on loan, while Leicester City and Southampton sold first team stars for large sums of money.
While the other two clubs raised a combined total of almost £250 million from player sales in the summer, Leeds was only able to garner somewhere about £26 million.

The majority of the Whites’ roster had loan provisions added to their contracts that became active following relegation; because of the decline in value brought on by their subpar performances, they chose to utilise them rather than sell them.

Brenden Aaronson is a prime example of it. He was acquired for £25 million in 2022, but he had a horrible season that forced Leeds to sell him at a big loss.

Leeds’s status on Aaronson so far

According to Phil Hay’s most recent story for the Athletic published this morning, Aaronson was thought to be a player Leeds might financially gain from in the future if he was able to have a successful season abroad.

Leeds decided to loan him out instead of selling him at a loss with the intention of letting him leave permanently later on for a sum that is close to what they paid for him.

With Aaronson having had a miserable start to his tenure at Union Berlin, that method currently appears to backfire. Aaronson has only started one game in all competitions since being dismissed at halftime in his second appearance after getting sent off.

His last club-level goal came against Chelsea roughly 14 months ago, and he has yet to record a single assist or goal. If Aaronson keeps playing at this level, Leeds will be in a similar, if not worse, predicament come next summer.

If anything, Aaronson’s worth will have dropped even further, leaving Leeds to choose between keeping a player who is obviously not good enough, loaning him out once more, or selling him for a significant loss.
