During the winter, when there is little money going into Goodison Park, Everton will need to find money to pay the costs.

According to financial expert Stefan Borson, who spoke with Football Insider exclusively, the Merseyside giants will encounter a “cash crunch” later this year when they must pay Laing O’Rourke, their primary stadium contractor, money in addition to operating costs in order to finish the new development.

Everton moved from Goodison ahead of the 2025–2026 season, and construction on the new stadium on Bramley–Moore Dock began in 2021.

Even though the development was first estimated to cost about £500 million, the Merseysiders now anticipate spending more over £800 million on it.

It comes at a time when Everton’s finances are a concern, with the club likely to face cash-flow issues later this year due to their ownership issues.

Everton stadium contractors could ask for money upfront

Borson revealed the stadium contractors could ask for payment to be paid upfront for any work they need to complete over the next few months.

He told Football Insider: “They have got themselves out of trouble each time they have been in more severe trouble.

“But that said, they clearly need to get on with doing a deal because as we get into the autumn and winter, cash is going to start to dry up in terms of cash inflows.

“They are not going to be able to get money in from season tickets or TV because they have already come in, so they will have limited amounts of matchday money coming in and will have lots of money going out.

“They will have all the operating costs of the club, the big wage bill and the bills to pay for the stadium on top of that.

“It would not be a stretch to think the stadium constructors are going to want payment up front and in advance for any stage payments that are being made to complete the stadium.

“They are going to have a cash crunch as we go through September, October, November and December before we get to another Premier League payment in early January or late December.

“But they are going to have to find the cash for that period from somewhere.”
